Introduction: Getting Started

You can find information here to help you refocus your life and energies on things that will help you improve all aspects of your life: the physical, the spiritual and the emotional.

So how do you get started? You take the time to do it. Here are three steps to get you going:

Step 1: Think!
Clear your mind and spirit by taking the time to meditate every day. Just 10 minutes a day can help your mind and body. Learn more about the benefits of meditation

Start simple. Quiet your mind and picture yourself the way you want to be. Don't just focus on the physical. How do you feel? What are you thinking? Get comfortable with that person.

When you're done meditating, list the attributes of the person you pictured. Is she fit, relaxed, outgoing, well read, involved? How many of these are who you are now? What's left? These will be your goals.

Step 2: Set goals!
Take the attributes you want to work on and create realistic goals to help you achieve them. They need to be specific and achievable. Get help setting goals

Step 3: Get help!
It's hard to reach goals without the support and buy-in from those around us. Tell a family member or friend about your goals and ask them to help you. Have specific things they can do to make things easier for you. For example, you may ask them to join you for a walk 3 times a week or to not bring junk food into the house. Or ask them to take an evening or weekend class with you.

And we will help! Every month we'll focus on different things you can do to help enrich your spirit, your body and your relationships. Plus you can access our message boards to share information with others. Next month, we'll focus on how to find more time to spend with your family.

Management Tip

Keep a Journal
Keep track of your aches, pains, and medications the same way as you track your feelings and emotions. Have this record handy for doctor's appointments so you and your physician can track not just how your treatment is working on your body, but also if medications are affecting your mood or if your arthritis flares when you're experiencing stress. A journal can be as simple as a spiral bound notebook or it can get as fancy as you like. Check out two examples in the Arthritis Store.
