What Is It?

Osteonecrosis (OS-tee-oh-knee-CROW-sis), also called Avascular Necrosis (A-vas-cue-lar-knee-CROW-sis), is a bone disorder that decreases the blood supply to the affected area, leads to tiny breaks within the bone, and can eventually cause bones to collapse.

What Are the Symptoms?

  • Joint stiffness
  • Limited motion
  • Muscle spasms
  • Pain

Treatment Options

  • Assistive devices
  • Heat
  • Medications: NSAIDs
  • Surgery

Who Is At Risk?

It occurs most often in people between the ages of 30 and 60, affecting slightly more men than women. Those most at risk are:

  • Alcoholics.
  • People taking high doses of steroids.
  • People with rheumatoid arthritis or systemic lupus.
  • Scuba divers who have the bends.
