Arthritis Prevention, Control & Cure Act Going Strong

Since its introduction to the 110th Congress, the Arthritis Prevention, Control and Cure Act has been steadily gaining momentum.  Your opinion is important and matters to your Members of Congress.  Please take a moment out of your busy schedule to help your Senators and U.S. Representatives understand how arthritis affects you in your daily life and ask them to cosponsor the Arthritis Prevention, Control & Cure Act if they haven't already.  Let them know how this legislation will improve the lives of the 46 millions of Americans living with arthritis.  Take action -- send your personal story!

Advocacy Spotlight
Andrea Blamble was recently nominated for a Jefferson Award, a national award established by the American Institute for Public Service.  She's teamed up with the Central Ohio Chapter to raise awareness and has helped garner the support of her Members of Congress.  Andrea also started J.A.C.K.S., a support group/club for kids with arthritis.  Learn more about Andrea's work.

A Supporter of Covering Kids & FamiliesCovering Kids and Families Back-to-School Campaign
Let's make sure that no child is left behind or uninsured this school year.  The Covering Kids and Families Back-to-School Campaign takes place every August and September to let parents know that low-cost or free health care coverage is available for their children.  There are programs available in every state and the District of Columbia.  Find out if you are eligible or help get the word out.

Kids Can Be Advocates Too!
Cutting grass and playing video games aren't the only things that kids did last summer.  During the 2006 National AJAO Conference held in Atlanta, Georgia, July 13-16, kids were busy interviewing discussion panelists, writing letters and creating artwork to send to their Members of Congress to explain how arthritis affects their everyday lives.  Check out the highlights, including a video of the first-ever Town Hall Meeting on juvenile arthritis.

News from the States:

  • Maine: The Northern and Southern New England Chapter recently initiated a new health advocacy forum in Maine.  Health advocacy forums are coalitions of voluntary health agencies, which work together to improve access to health services and medications.
  • New Jersey State Senator Robert Singer, has drafted a resolution in support of the National Arthritis Prevention, Control and Cure Act.   The New Jersey Chapter plans to pilot a “live” advocacy booth at one of its nine Arthritis Walks scheduled for May, 2007.
